Seabirds

albatross

Seabirds, such as this Laysan albatross, surveyed at-sea fly faster than the boat and can alternate between flight and sitting on the sea surface. This behaviour can cause current methods to produce inaccurate abundance estimates. We at CREEM are developing a model that can combine knowledge of seabird movement into existing distance sampling to improve these estimates.
